Detailed Research Interests:

My research involves chemical education and this field involves a wide variety of topics.  Some questions which drive my research are: Why are some students successful in chemistry but other students struggle and not succeed?  What are the study approaches chemistry students use and which ones are successful?  What role do out-of classroom experiences (also called informal learning experiences) play in understanding chemistry?  How do we measure success in chemistry and how can those measures be improved?

I am also interested in the role of chemistry instructors in the classroom. Other questions would be:  What experiences do beginning chemistry teachers have and how does this affect their approaches to teaching?  How do teaching techniques vary within the chemistry disciplines and why?  What novel teaching techniques can be incorporated in chemistry and what are the benefits to doing so?
