Honors 3000
MODERN MEDICINE: THE HUMAN
ASPECT
Spring 2009
Instructor: Dr. J. D. Hendrix
HON 3000/03 MODERN
MEDICINE: THE HUMAN ASPECT. Human
culture and society have changed significantly in response to developments in
medicine since the mid 19th century. While the 20th century began with hope and
confidence in medical science's ability to conquer disease, it ended with
increasing skepticism and pessimism in the face of such challenges as emergent
diseases, antibiotic resistance, pharmaceutical scandals, and the affordability
of health care. In this colloquium, we will explore the impact of medical
advances on the human condition through the use of selected readings, film, and
other media. This course will fulfill the first or second Honors Colloquium
requirement.
