Minutes for the 10-5-99 meeting of the KSU SAACS

Members present: Dr. Powers, Swapan Jain, Kurt Buhner, Kenna Tata, Michelle, Carissa Biddle, Bridget Bowen, Chad Siniard, Suzanne, and John Steed.

At this meeting, several ACS members talked about their experiences with co-ops and/or directed studies:

Kurt Buhner on co-ops:

• Students can get money for work

• Students may obtain interview experience

• Builds discipline

• Students may get credit for up to 9 hours of co-op experience

• Students frequently obtain jobs prior to graduation

• If you plan to participate in a co-op, plan to take a couple of classes only

• Ask to see the lab that you’ll be working in

• Plan to sign up for the co-op at least a semester in advance

• Students may see Dr. Reggio if interested in a co-op

• Dr. Combs has some industry contacts

• The ACS has a booklet published once per year that lists companies which participate in co-ops.

 

Swapan Jain on Directed Studies • You can make your own hours

• Great resume builder

• Students often get co-publication in a journal or magazine

 

Also discussed at this week’s meeting was National Chemistry Week: • It will be held the second week in November

• The ACS mentioned setting up a booth in the lobby downstairs and hosting a chemistry-related contest between students of local high schools

• Tom will contact Vanderveer

• Michelle will contact Crook at Wheeler High

• Suzanne will contact Sequoia High

• More will be discussed at our next meeting

 

The GBI was agreed upon for our field trip. This trip is to be held in February. The details will be worked out in the future.

We will also try to have people to come in and talk about the interview process (for jobs and grad schools).
