Certificate in Information Technology - FAQs

What is a certificate? How does it differ from a minor?

A certificate program consists of a collection of related courses. At the satisfactory completion of the coursework, students will receive a certificate from KSU, acknowledging the completion of the coursework. Awarding of the certificate does not have to wait until graduation. At KSU, minors are not reflected on your transcript. The certificate will give you and future employers, tangible evidence of your accomplishment.

What is required to complete the Information Technology Certificate?

Students must complete the required and elective courses, with a grade of "C" or better in each course. Prior to completing the last course in the Certificate, students should apply for the Certificate in the CSIS Department.

How do I get involved in a co-op or internship?

You cannot enroll in IT 3396 or IT 3398 until you have completed the required Career Services Co-op & Internship Orientation. Once you have completed the orientation, Career Services will begin assisting you in locating a co-op or internship opportunity. Once you have been made an offer of employment you can enroll in IT 3396 or IT 3398, depending upon the type of employment. Students should complete the Career Services Orientation, one semester before they plan to co-op.

If I already have a bachelor's degree, can I participate in the IT certificate program?

Yes. You will have to apply for admission to the University as an undergraduate student. Check with KSU admissions for current admission procedures, and pay careful attention to the deadlines for having your paperwork in to their office.

If I start in the IT Certificate program, what happens if I decide to major in Information Systems?

The IS degree program will allow you to use some of your IT courses as major electives, and the rest can be used as free electives. CSIS 2300 is a required course in the IS program. Because the IS program has no General Electives and several long prerequisite requirements, it is best to make up your mind as early as possible regarding your major. Check with an advisor in the CSIS department for more details.

Can I use IT courses as major electives in my program of study?

If your major is Information Systems, you may use IT 4525 eCommerce as a major elective - all other IT courses must be used as free electives. If you are not an IS major, check with your program's advisor. All KSU students can use the IT courses for free elective credit.

Where can I get an application for the IT Certificate program?
