2300 Principles of Computing
Prerequisite
There
are no prerequisites for this introductory course. However, basic
computer literacy is assumed.
Description
Principles of Computing is
the first course a student should take to prepare for a career in
computer science or information systems. Topics include information
systems in organizations, hardware, software, database concepts,
telecommunications and networks, the Internet, systems development,
security, privacy, ethics, programming logic, algorithms, abstraction,
and data structures.
Objectives
After completing the course,
students will be able to:
- Understand how computer
information systems are used to support organizational missions.
- Articulate the
organizational and societal impacts of data communications and
Internet technologies.
- Develop a basic Web page.
- Understand the processes
involved in designing, implementing and maintaining an information
system.
- Articulate a position on
various ethical issues regarding information systems and the
Internet.
- Describe current
employment trends in computer science and information systems.
- Understand programming
logic, data structures, abstraction, and algorithms.
