International Chemistry Olympiad

International Competition to be held at

Cambridge England

Local Competition is Sponsored by

Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society

and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Kennesaw State University

Three tiers:

1. Qualifying exams at the local level to determine who takes the national exam.
2. Thirteen students will be chosen from among those who take the local section exam to take the national exam.
3. Twenty U.S. high school chemistry students who take the national exam are chosen for the US team.

Steps to Cambridge, England:

Step One
Talk to your high school chemistry teacher about taking the Local Exam. Your teacher should then contact: Dr. Scott Lewis, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mail Stop 1203, 1000 Chastain Road, Kennesaw, GA 30144


Step Two
Prepare for the Local Exam by attending tutoring sessions led by KSU Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty at KSU on Saturday, February 28th.

There will be three sessions:

Equilibrium and Reaction Rates: 8:30 AM to 10:15 AM

Organic: 10:30 AM to 12:15 PM

Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry: 1 PM to 2:45 PM.

All Review Sessions are on February 28 in Clendenin (Building #11) Room 2010.

Step Three
Take the Local Exam at KSU on March 21st in Clendenin (Building #11) Room 2010 from 9 AM to 11 AM or at another sponsoring site during the month of March.


Step Four
The top thirteen students as judged by performance on the Local Exam will take the National Exam at KSU on April 25, 2009 from 9 AM to 2:30 PM in Clendenin (Building #11)1009. You can review past National Exams here.


Step Five
Based upon performances on the National Exam, the National Committee will choose the top 20 students to represent the United States at the National Olympiad competition in Cambridge, England. These students will attend a two-week study camp held at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado to prepare for the competition.
