What
Does A Student Assistant Do?
Student assistants are an
important part of the function of the Biology and Physics Department. Student
assistants help in the setup and maintenance of our labs. The students involved
learn additional skills not taught in the classes and gain valuable work experience.
Those students also receive priority registration and they get paid! Many of
our former student assistants were hired into jobs after graduation because
of their lab experience here.
If you are considering becoming
a student assistant, here are a few things to consider:
- Much of the work done
is not very glamorous. Washing glassware, cleaning tables, disposal of waste
and similar tasks are the majority of the work.
- Our student assistants
are expected to be punctual and do the tasks assigned to them. We have
no replacement for no-shows or those who are late. The
labs require setup and takedown continually and clean up always needs to be
done. If you are juggling another job, family, and your studies, your
time management will be important. You will have 2 responsibilities - as a
student and as a student assistant. Both of those require you to manage
your time properly: Budgeting your time to allow for work without interfering
with your studies.
- As you gain experience,
you may be given more responsibility as your skills improve.
Requirements:
- Be a student
taking at least 12 credit hours during the semester.
- Be in good
academic standing.
- Preference
is given to biology majors, but not necessary. All majors are invited to
apply.
- Fill out an
application and turn it in, in person, at room SC 316 or SC 308.
