CSIS Curriculum Committee

Monday, October 29, 2007

2:00pm-3:15pm

Present: Don Amoroso, Tridib Bandyopadhyay, Dick Gayler, Hisham Haddad, Ken Hoganson, Herb Mattord (for Mike Whitman), Solomon Negash, Amy Woszczynski

1)     Meeting came to order at 2:05pm. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes from 10/22/07, with the correction of adding Ken Hoganson's name to the list of those present. There was no other discussion. The motion passed.

2)     A motion was made and seconded that the Doctorate Initiative Committee should elect a chair from its group of volunteer members. The volunteer members are Ying, Hisham, Solomon, Ken, and Amy. After discussion, the motion was passed. A motion was made and seconded that the CSIS-CC Chair should call a meeting of the Doctorate Initiative Committee. There was no other discussion. The motion passed.

4)     The committee discussed the program review committees. Initial reviews for the university and/or USG must be completed by December 3, so the committee needs to be formed quickly. A motion was made and seconded that the program review committees should oversee the process of obtaining information for university reports by December 3. More in-depth program review should follow by March 3, 2008. After discussion, the motion passed.
A motion was made and seconded that we should form 2 program review committees: one for the undergraduate programs and one for the graduate programs. Members of the graduate program review committees should be graduate faculty members. After discussion, the motion passed.
A motion was made and seconded that we should have at least 3 and not more than 5 members on each committee. After discussion, the motion passed. Amy will send an e-mail soliciting nominations for the program review committees. If more than 5 faculty members respond to the request, a run-off election will be held, with the top 5 faculty members serving on the committee.
The Curriculum Committee should be prepared to present a status report of activities at the last departmental meeting of the year and every meeting thereafter.

5)     Discussion followed concerning CSIS 2101. The committee needs to evaluate issues concerning the evolution of 2101, including:
1) Course visibility across campus and implications for the department
2) Benefits/drawbacks to the department as a result of offering the course
3) Strategic issues with regard to offering the course, including the appropriateness of the course for other majors on campus, such as psychology and communications. The course should align with CSIS strategic goals.
4) Decision on whether or not to pursue 2101 (and possibly one or more other departmental courses) as a potential general education course
5) Recommendations on the future of the course
Since many of these issues are strategic and affect curriculum across the department, a motion was made and seconded that the CSIS Curriculum Committee as a whole should oversee this initiative. The motion passed. The committee noted that a special thanks should go to Jorge and Meg, who have managed this course since its inception.

6)     A motion was made and seconded that any "substantial" curriculum review should have 2 readings at the Department Curriculum Committee. Discussion followed, with a question of which revisions should be considered "substantial." The motion was amended to include a definition of "substantial" curriculum review as any proposal that at least 1 Curriculum Committee member believes is substantial will be considered substantial by the committee as a whole. The motion passed.

7)     A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 3:15pm.

8)  Next meeting: TBD

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Woszczynski, CSIS-CC Chair
